RESEARCH TRIP TO LATIN AMERICA – SEPT. 2007

NAME AND POSITION OF RESEARCHER: Alan Story, Senior Lecturer in
Intellectual Property Law, Kent Law School, University of Kent,
Canterbury, United Kingdom; Chairperson, The Copy South Research Group,
publishers of the Copy/South Dossier( www.copysouth.org ), available in
Spanish later in 2007. A former Canadian journalist; lived in the UK
since 1995, currently lives in London.

PURPOSE OF TRIP: To conduct interviews and discuss issues with persons in
Latin America interested in copyright issues and the effects of copyright
law & ideology in the daily lives of people. The end result - to research
and write a popular book on the largely negative effect of copyright on
the peoples and countries of the global South ( Latin America, Africa, and
Asia.) for publication in late 2008.

TOPICS TO RESEARCHED: The issues, among others, to be investigated
include: education, libraries, computer software, broadcasting, the music
and publishing industries and "the star" system, the Internet, cultural
imperialism and cultural diversity, copyright and indigenous peoples,
access by the visually impaired, translations, academic open access
journals, collecting societies, literacy programmes, and the economics of
the global copyright regime.

TYPE OF PEOPLE TO BE INTERVIEWED: Librarians, teachers, cultural workers
(musicians, writers, film makers), university academics and researchers,
indigenous peoples, information "activists", economists, and computer
programmers. (I am less interested in interviewing copyright lawyers,
politicians, and policy makers.)

DATES OF TRIP ( approximate) : 5-25 September 2007.

ITINERARY: I will spend approximately 10 days in Caracas at the start of
the trip. After Venezuela, the itinerary is still undecided; it could
include Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, or other countries. Due to time and
transport constraints, my trip will primarily be limited to larger urban
areas in whatever countries I visit.

THE QUESTION OF LANGUAGE: I am a uni-lingual English speaker. In various
locations in Latin America, I will be hiring paid interpreters, as
required, for Spanish-English and Portuguese-English interpretation. ( At
present, I can get brief Spanish language e-mails sent to address below
translated into English.)
